MarleyConcertPoster.com has produced a documentary that chronicles the creation of the iconic 1978 Bob Marley & the Wailers Berkeley Concert Poster and how it became part of reggae history.  Colleen Cannon – Artist and designer of the concert poster shares her incredible story including her mixed feelings about creating her first poster ever for a sold out concert. She was only 23 years old and had just graduated from college the year before when the opportunity of a lifetime literally fell in her lap.

Berkeley Concert Poster Artist - Colleen Cannon

Cannon gives you a behind the scenes look at how she met Bob Marley backstage.  She also discusses the creative process, design and printing of the original poster as well as her 2004 digitally re-mastered reproduction.  As a special treat the artist reveals the original artwork to the public for the poster for the first time ever!

1978 was an amazing year for this young woman.  The trajectory that led to Cannon being tapped to design the Bob Marley concert poster also included an assignment to photograph Michael Jackson and his brothers at a press conference as well as a plumb assignment with the prestigious Berkeley Jazz Festival.

The now vintage 1978 poster has been made famous by Reggae Archivist and BEAT Magazine founder, Roger Steffens and is the centerpiece of his Bob Marley Collection.  Cannon’s story was featured in the 2004 BEAT magazine Annual Bob Marley Anniversary edition.  Reprinted here.

In the forward Steffens explains: “Visitors to my “World of Reggae” exhibit in 2001 at the Queen Mary often crowded around the Wailers’ section centerpiece, a poster for Marley’s 1978 Greek Theater show in Berkeley, that was signed by Bob and 28 of those closest to him.”  He goes on to say that Cannon “conceived what is now one of the iconographic images of Marley – her first poster ever.”  That autographed poster is now priceless.

Cannon currently lives outside Hilo, Hawaii where she works as an educator, artist and web developer.
